The South Lancashire Regiment was formed in 1881 from the 40th and 82nd Regiments of the Foot (2nd Somersetshire and Prince of Wales's Volunteers respectively) until amalgamation on 01 July 1958 with the East Lancashire Regiment to become the Lancashire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Volunteers). This further amalgamated with the Loyal North Lancashire regiment in 1970 to become the Queen's Lancashire regiment (QLR).
The proud and Loyal Regiment served with distinction amongst others in the Boer War, both World Wars, at Gallipoli and on the Western Front, during D-Day on Sword Beach and in 1919 during the third Afghan War. The Regiment earned 64 battle honours and has 4 Victoria Crosses
