Percy Tenantry Volunteers Powder Horn
A rare powder horn belonging to the Percy Tenantry Volunteers. From the Alnwick castle armoury, in fantastic condition. Brass gilt fitting and the base engraved with the recumbent crescent moon - the mark of Hugh Percy, the Duke of Northumberland. Neck engraved D55, possibly indicating that the powder horn belonged to the Volunteer Dragoons. Minor chip to bone, probable dating c.1805
The Percy Tenantry Volunteers were a privately funded, 1,500-strong militia force formed in 1798 to defend the North East of England against a potential French invasion during the Napoleonic Wars. They commonly used Baker Rifles, and were disbanded on the first of July, 1814.
