Japanese Patriotic Banner for the Kamichi Village of the 18th District
Very nice 1930's / Early WW2 Japanese patriotic flag for civilian use. In good condition, some damage to decorative aspects. Calfskin holds the eyelets. Heavy braiding giving substantial feel.
Kamichi Flag.
A Japanese patriotic banner for the Kamichi Village of the 18th District, measures 100cms x 70cms. Purple flag printed with a rising sun motif within fruiting millet, together with inscription, and within an orange-coloured fringe. Corners reinforced with gold lacquered leather and ornamental metal eyes. Great condition except for section of gold ribbon (per photos) which is separated from main body - an easy fix for a collector. Calfskin is in good shape.
Text is written in traditional Chinese characters which is typical for older Japanese artefacts. "Kanji" (literally "Han characters") are Japanese logographic symbols adopted from Chinese characters and were used to represent big 'ideas' or 'patriotism'. These flags were common in the pursuit of patriotic idealism which would have been prevalent in the lead up to war. A fantastic and scarce example.
