Finnish horse head puukko knife. 19.5cm. With leather and brass sheath.

Normally made of stacked galalith, birch bark or stained bone with a distinctive cast brass pommel shaped like a horse's head being typical of regional cutlers from Kauhava in Finland.

These models were very popular from late 19th century to mid 20th Century as general purpose and hunting knives.

The deep groove on the upper spine of the blade became common in post 1905 manufacture and dark spotted marble texture of the handle closely resembles galalith which is an early synthetic bio-plastic made from milk protein. The use of galalith became very popular from 1920s onwards. The cast brass horse head pommel suggests mid-century production.

All taken together this points to dating around 1950.
